Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland

Located at the heart of Switzerland, the canton of Lucerne grew up around a Benedictine monastery, founded about 750 on the right bank of the Reuss by Murbach Abbey in Alsace, of which it long remained a "cell". The Chapel Bridge (“Kapellbrücke”) in the background is a wooden pedestrian bridge named after the nearby St. Peter’s Chapel; it was built in 1333 and is one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe.
