Drum Tower of Xi'an

The drum was beat at sunset to signal the end of the day

Commanding a panoramic view of Xi'an city from the top of the drum tower, the drum tower got its name from the huge drum within the building that was used not only to signal the running of time but also as an alarm in emergency situations. Constructed in 1380 during the early Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), its architecture was inspired by the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) and Qing Dynasty.
