National Palace of Pena

One of the major expressions of 19the century Romanticism in the world

Standing on the top of hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, the Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle and national monument of Portugal. Its 19th century Romanticism style of architecture with vividly painted terraces, decorative battlements and mythological statues stands in stark contrast to the surrounding nature and forest around Pena. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is now mainly used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.
