Birthplace of Mozart

While most famously known for being the birthplace of famed composer Mozart, its old city centre (Altstadt) is also renowned for its baroque architecture with one of the most well-preserved city centres north of the alps. The name Salzburg, which means "Salt Castle" (Latin: Sales Burgium), was derived from the barges carrying salt on the River Salzach during medieval times together with Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city's fortress built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard.
