Songzanlin Temple

Also known as the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery

Built in 1679, the Songzanlin Monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan and the most important monastery in Southwest China, sometimes being referred to as the Little Potala Palace. This place was also the source of inspiration for James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon (1933) which first introduced the fictional utopian lamasery Shangri-La to the world.
