Village Monsanto, Portugal

Once dubbed the Most Portuguese Town in Portugal in 1938

Monsanto hangs off a mountaintop overlooking the Portuguese countryside with scenic views that stretch into the horizon. This has been an important strategic position since prehistoric times, with the earliest traces of man hailing back to the Early Stone Age at the time of the ice-ages. Subsequently, the area has been inhabited by the Romans, the Visigoth in the early Middle Ages and the Arabs.
