Castle on the Hill - Bourscheid

An island of stone amid an ocean of green countryside.

Around the year 1000, a wooden fort was transformed into a stone-built castle. Today, Bourscheid castle remains as the largest castle among the 75 castles in Luxembourg that still stand today. Excavations have identified structures of Roman, Merovingian, Carolingian and Ottonian origin. Of this first Gothic-Romanesque building only the main tower and the inner wall remain. The ruins were classified in 1936 as a "historical monument" and acquired by the Luxembourg Government in 1972.
