The Eiffel Tower

The 1889 World's Fair Centrepiece

Meant only to be a temporary exhibition during the 1889 World's Fair, the Eiffel Tower was once the subject of controversy and seen as the ugliest building in Paris, drawing criticism from numerous Parisians. However, it looked so strange yet was so popular that it wasn't destroyed after the World's Fair ended. Over time, the Eiffel Tower became a cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable buildings in the world.
